ISEE Registration: Four Test Formats, Fees and Steps

Families register for the ISEE by creating a parent account on admission.org, the website of E3n (formerly ERB), then choosing the applicant's entry grade, a test format and a date. Four formats are offered: At-Home, At-School, In-Office and Prometric Centers, with test fees from $130 to $255 depending on format and entry grade. A student may test once per testing season and up to three times in a school year. Online results usually arrive in 3–5 days and paper results in 5–10 days.

Registration is a short process, but several choices made during it cannot easily be changed afterward: the entry grade, the test format and the season. This page walks through those choices in the order a family meets them, and explains how the four formats differ so that the decision can be made once.

Three things to settle before opening the registration page

This section covers the decisions that should be made before any account is created. A mistake in any of them can cost a testing season.

  1. The grade the student is applying to enter. The test level follows the entry grade, not the grade the student currently attends. A student in grade 6 who is applying to grade 7 takes the Middle Level. The levels page lists all six entry points.
  2. The application deadlines of the target schools. Results take several days to be released, so a test date placed close to a deadline leaves no room for a second attempt. Counting backward from the deadline is more reliable than counting forward from the student’s readiness.
  3. Which test each school accepts. Many schools accept both the ISEE and the SSAT, but not every school does, and there is no single list. Each school’s admission page is the authority. The ISEE vs SSAT comparison explains how to choose when a school accepts both.

A student may test only once per testing season and no more than three times in a school year. For that reason, a first test in the fall season generally keeps a retake available before most winter deadlines. The test dates page explains the seasons in detail.

How to register, step by step

This section describes the registration sequence in the E3n parent account on admission.org. The order matters most at steps 2 and 4.

  1. Create a parent account on admission.org. The account belongs to the parent or guardian, and one account can manage more than one student.
  2. Add the student and enter the entry grade. The system assigns the level from this entry. An error here sends the student to the wrong level.
  3. Choose a test format. The four formats and their fees are compared in the next section.
  4. Choose a date and location. Available sessions appear inside the account and differ by format. School test sites are limited by each school’s own schedule, so popular dates should be booked early. The dates shown in the account are the ones that count.
  5. Arrange accommodations if the student needs them. Families should review the accommodations requirements on admission.org before picking a date, so that the approval and the session match. See the accommodations page.
  6. Pay the registration fee. If a school has approved a fee waiver, the waiver is applied at this stage rather than afterward.
  7. Add schools to receive scores. Once the score report is generated, add the receiving schools in the parent account. Adding schools carries no additional fee.

The four test formats compared

This section answers where the test can be taken and what each option costs. All four formats cover the same content and use the same scoring, so the choice affects convenience and fee rather than the result.

Format Supervision and delivery Grouping Entry grades Fee, grades 2–4 Fee, grades 5–12
At-Home (school-organized) Remote proctor, computer Individual 2–12 $130 $170
At-Home (E3n-organized) Remote proctor, computer Individual 2–12 $185 $250
At-School, standard registration In person, paper or computer Group 2–12 $130 $170
At-School, late registration In person, paper or computer Group 2–12 $175 $215
At-School, walk-in registration In person, paper or computer Group 2–12 $190 $230
In-Office, group In person, paper or computer Group 2–12 $185 $225
In-Office, individual (includes accommodations) In person, paper or computer Individual 2–12 $210 $255
Prometric Centers In person, computer Group 5–12 only Not offered $250

The At-School tiers rise as the registration date approaches the test date, which is the main reason to register early. The full fee picture, including refunds, is on the fees page.

Choosing a format

This section describes who each format tends to suit. These are practical observations, not recommendations from E3n.

At-Home. The student tests from home on a computer under a remote proctor. It removes travel, and it can help a student who becomes anxious in an unfamiliar room. The cost is responsibility: the family supplies the computer, the camera, the network connection and a quiet, private space, and a technical interruption is harder to resolve than one at a physical site. Families should complete every device check the instructions list well before the test day.

At-School. The student tests in a group at a school test site, with an in-person proctor. It has the lowest fee, and the setting resembles the school environment the student is applying into. Dates and seats depend on the host school, and the late and walk-in tiers cost more.

In-Office. The student tests at an E3n office-type site, in a group or individually. Dates are generally more flexible than at school sites, and a student who needs accommodations can be placed in an individual room. The fee is higher than at a school site, and the number of locations is limited.

Prometric Centers. The student tests on a computer at a professional testing center, with many locations across the country and a wider choice of dates. It is the highest-priced group option and is closed to applicants to grades 2–4.

A few patterns hold across most families:

  • Applicants to grades 2–4 usually benefit from an in-person site, where staff manage the equipment and the procedure.
  • Applicants to grades 5–12 who type and read comfortably on screen have the widest choice, including Prometric.
  • A student who has never taken a long timed test on a computer may be better served by practicing in that format first, whichever format is chosen.
  • A first attempt is generally better placed in a setting with on-site staff than in a setup that depends on the family’s own equipment.

Seasons and timing

This section explains how the testing seasons shape the choice of date. Each testing season allows at most one registration, and each school year allows at most three. The seasons are commonly described as fall (August–November), winter (December–March) and spring/summer (April–July). The months are not listed season by season on admission.org, so the dates shown inside the registration account are the ones that apply.

In practice, a student who tests in the fall has the winter season available for a second attempt before many application deadlines, while a student whose first test falls in winter has fewer options. The test dates page works through backward timelines by entry grade. Decisions about repeating the test and about which results to send are covered on the retakes and score sending page.

Changes, waivers and score delivery

This section covers what happens after the registration is paid. Rescheduling and cancellation follow fixed rules, and fee waivers follow a separate channel.

Situation Outcome
Reschedule at least 1 day before the test (At-Home, At-School, In-Office) $50 rescheduling fee
Cancel a test $55 cancellation fee; balance refunded within 90 days of registration
Cancel after 90 days from registration No refund
On or after test day No rescheduling
Prometric Centers, 31 or more days before the test Free
Prometric Centers, 30–15 days before $25
Prometric Centers, 14–5 days before $45
Prometric Centers, 4–1 days before $75
Prometric Centers, within 4 days before the test, cancellation No refund

E3n offers fee waivers for families with financial need. The request goes through the school the student is applying to, not through E3n, so a family that expects to need one should contact the school before paying.

After the test, computer-based results usually arrive in 3–5 days and paper results in 5–10 days. The score report has no overall score, and the essay is not scored. Reading the report is covered on the scores page.

Common registration mistakes

This section lists errors that tend to cost families time or money.

  • Entering the current grade instead of the entry grade. The level then does not match the applications being submitted.
  • Registering late at a school site. The late and walk-in tiers cost more than the standard rate.
  • Placing the first test in the winter season. A second attempt may then fall after some deadlines.
  • Relying on older guides. The test organization changed its name and website in 2026, so instructions copied from earlier years may be out of date.
  • Skipping the equipment check for At-Home testing. Problems found on test day are harder to fix than problems found a week earlier.

Frequently asked questions

Where do families register for the ISEE?

Registration takes place on admission.org, the website of E3n (formerly ERB), through a parent account. One account can hold more than one student. The former ERB domain now redirects to admission.org, but older guides and screenshots may describe steps that have changed, so families should follow the pages currently shown on admission.org.

Can the ISEE be taken at home?

Yes. At-Home testing is one of the four test formats. It is computer-based, taken by one student at a time, and supervised remotely. The fee is $130 (entry grades 2–4) or $170 (entry grades 5–12) when organized by a school, and $185 or $250 when organized by E3n. The family is responsible for the equipment and the testing space.

Which ISEE test format is best for a student?

No format is best for every student. A school test site usually has the lowest fee and a formal setting. An In-Office session offers more flexible dates and an individual room. Prometric suits applicants to grades 5–12 who are comfortable on a computer. At-Home suits families with reliable equipment and a quiet room. Younger applicants often do better in an in-person setting.

Can a student applying to grade 3 test at a Prometric center?

No. Prometric Centers accept only applicants to grades 5–12, which means the Lower, Middle and Upper Levels. Applicants to grades 2–4 choose among At-Home, At-School and In-Office testing.

Can an ISEE registration be rescheduled or canceled?

Yes, with fees. For At-Home, At-School and In-Office tests, rescheduling at least one day before the test costs $50. Canceling carries a $55 fee, and the balance is refunded when the cancellation occurs within 90 days of registration. No rescheduling is available on or after test day. Prometric Centers use a tiered schedule that is free 31 or more days before the test.

Is there an ISEE fee waiver?

Yes. E3n offers fee waivers to families with financial need, but the request goes through the school the student is applying to, not to E3n directly. Families planning to apply for financial aid should ask the school about a waiver before paying the registration fee.

Does it cost extra to send ISEE scores to more schools?

No. After the score report is generated, families add receiving schools in the parent account, and adding schools carries no additional fee. The essay is not scored, and only schools selected to receive scores receive a copy of it.
